00:00 – 00:31: This building has quite an interesting history. It is designed for Osram, a company manufacturing electrical light bulbs – so you could say the building used to be a stronghold for artificial light. But now with the process we are in we are transferring the building into a signature building for the use of natural daylight.
It is culture center, located in Copenhagen. It is the turning point for lots of cultural activities such as dancing, music and courses of all kinds.
00:32 – 01:07: After renovating the building the energy consumption has been cut down by 60 per cent and the corresponding CO2 emissions has been cut down by 40 per cent.
Besides better insulation the measures taken have been renewable energy sources. It is in three elements. First of all it is the passive solar heat gain coming through the new roof windows. Secondly, it is the use of natural daylight from the roof windows and natural ventilation. And third element is the solar thermal system delivering hot tap water to the house and heating the basement of the building.
01:08- 01:44: The main idea behind the design of the building is to have secondary rooms such as this hallway facing north while activity rooms are facing south bringing lots of daylight and passive solar energy into the rooms.
This is a very energy-efficient building design, and as a matter of fact the use of roof windows is the most energy-efficient way of bringing high levels of light into buildings. In this building it has been combined with a large use of natural ventilation which ensures a good indoor climate and a healthy environment for the people who are using the building.
01:45 – 02:17: Existing buildings represent a huge amount of the energy use in buildings. We know from European member states that 40 percent of the total use of energy in Europe comes from existing buildings. Off course the majority of these buildings are older buildings which can be renovated.
