New demonstrations against the Mullah regime are planned in Teheran and other large cities in Iran, according to Förenade föreningar för ett fri Iran (FFFI), an umbrella organisation for Swedish-based organisations wanting democratic changes in Iran.
The government has closed the university and dormitories as it fears a new round of protests on Thursday, which is the tenth anniversary of a brutal attack in 1999 by the Basij militia and police on protesting students.
Thousands of members of the police force, the Basij militia and the Revolutionary Guard have been positioned throughout Teheran to counter attempts to gather people in large or small groups. Thousands more security guards are patrolling the streets, FFFI says, citing a witness who wishes to remain anonymous due to fears of reprisals.
The anniversary is an important date for the Iranian liberation and equality movement. Following massive student protests for press freedom, the security forces stormed a students' hostel near Teheran University on 8 July 1999. One person was murdered and many were injured, and most of the protesters were arrested, FFFI says.
Students were beaten and thrown out of windows in the middle of the night by hooligans in the Ansar Hezbollah movement, with the backing of the Law Enforcement Forces (LEF) and special forces under one of the ministries. The following day the students and the people continued their protest actions in Teheran and other cities in Iran, and the demonstrations continued for six days.
