Brooklyn Supports Local Food

As more Americans demand to know where their food comes from, local communities have stepped up to provide better options than the salty, processed meals packed with corn syrup and chemicals (and, tragically, far too often tainted with E. Coli) found in supermarket chains. In Brooklyn, known for its neighborly camaraderie in support of local, artisanal products, the Greenpoint Food Market, founded by Joann Kim,… Continue

A food revolution is underway in Denmark and Trina Hahnemann wants the rest of the world to know about it. On the latest stop of her coast-to-coast book tour in the United States, Hahnemann came to New York to discuss her new endeavor The Scandinavian Cookbook. The recipes in her cookbook are healthy, seasonal and fuse global influences at times, while staying true to her Danish roots. They draw on the cuisines and agricultural and fishing traditions of Scandinavia, pre… Continue

Swedish Fashion Designer Takes the Runway

Under the white tents spread over Bryant Park, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is in full swing in NYC, but that’s not the only place to find runway shows this year. Emerging Swedish designer Maja Svensson, who recently launched her eco-friendly clothing line ELSAandME, timed her first runway show to overlap Fashion Week on Sept. 16. She chose a fitting downtown venue, the Scandinavian restaurant and bar, White Slab Palace. In a private space behind the dining area, people packed e… Continue

The Path to Copenhagen and Beyond the Kyoto Protocol

This video echoes the urgency of the panel discussion I have written about in this entry. In fact, Karina Brisby, the interactive campaigning manager at Oxfam, directed me to the Voice Project on Livestream, where I found this video. She is part of the Voice Project, which gives bloggers access to vital political events, including the U.N. Climate Change Conference. She attended the same panel to stream the session for her viewers. As New York Climate Week gears up for… Continue

ELSAandME

If eco-clothing calls to mind drab earth tones and khaki fabrics, then Swedish designer Maja Svensson’s debut fashion line ELSAandME is sure to turn heads with its bright colors and stylish silhouettes. Svensson hosted her first trunk show at the shop FACE Stockholm in New York City’s trendy Soho neighborhood on Aug. 28. The clothing line, which is named after her grandmother, Elsa, features dress pants that pop with color. They are made locally with organic cotton and come i… Continue

Face the Music ... and Dance!

Those who come to see Face the Music … and Dance during this year’s Fringe Festival can expect beauty, repression, love, humor and human struggle to take center stage in five visceral dances rife with emotion. Each dance was choreographed by a different person, an escalation of viewpoints in reaction to the current hard economic times and grounded in the idea of dancing away despair. The show opens with the chilly… Continue

Should Artists Go to Burma?

The Wide Angle report on Burma that aired on Aug. 19 on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) presented ideas for taking steps to end the country’s isolation, not least among them, the idea to empower the voices of artists and writers to express the reality of life in the country. The episode called Eyes of the Storm documented the experiences of Burmese children during the year since Cyclone Nargis, the worst natural disast… Continue

Turning Heads, Frocks in Flight

A true test of a fine production is the spirit of its performers and their ability to make the most of its material and setting, even when faced with adversity. When dancers from Gabrielle Lansner and Company performed Turning Heads, Frocks in Flight, on Aug. 13, the cast was faced with an unwelcome surprise — rain. The free outdoor production open to the public began its run on Aug. 3 and had yet to be called off due to bad weather. This was the last show on its schedule and in the even… Continue

Of Ether and Grace

Screens, delicate as lace, are on display through August at the Christopher Henry Gallery in NYC. The show Of Ether and Grace features 10 finely crafted pieces of art made by Fiyel Levent and Danish designer Anne Romme. Inside the gallery, a converted church that still has a cross etched on its white façade, there are eight vertical screens that hang on opposite walls and two large screens that stand in the middle of the floor. The hanging screens started as drawings, ink on paper. Thes… Continue

The summer jazz series at Scandinavia House in NYC ended on a high note with a show by Danish singer Tine Bruhn on July 30. She performed with bandmates Daniela Schachter (piano), Oleg Osenkov (bass) and E.J. Strickland (drums). The band’s lush melodies formed a backdrop for lyrics about love, romance and emotion sung in Bruhn’s sultry voice.
