"Very well done... Nice juxtaposition and clever use of comedy to point out a very troubling issue... the question to me is when is the use of force necessary? Although it looked as if no one was hurt was it really necessary to detain those people in…"
The artists behind the political movement, Free Happiness (Gratis Lykke), Claus Ankersen and Claus Bo, felt that, although they did not capture the headlines like the Social Democrats or the Liberal Party, their one-week mini-campaign was a great success.
Using the cameras on their mobile phones, they produced business card-sized campaign posters that were quickly snapped up by curious citizens. Slogans included 'smile and make the world more beautiful' and 'why let life pass by?'.
Legalising hash was the focus of Klaus Trier Tuxen's Hemp Party. Claiming support from all sections of society - craftsmen, recipients of public welfare benefits, musicians, advertising executives, and journalists - Tuxen set his sights on challenging the government's 'undemocratic and manipulative' prohibition on marijuana.
Nevertheless, Tuxen saw his party's fortunes wane in this election cycle: the 744 votes garnered only amounted to 0.3 percent of the electorate - down from the 0.5 percent collected in the last election.
With 48 candidates listed as part of the Love Party (Kærlighedspartiet), spokesman Allan Anarchos hoped the party's ideology and philosophy of 'loving anarchy' could strike a chord with voters.
'We're serious, but we're also relaxed. I think we can get a hold of people who usually don't vote,' he told The Copenhagen Post before the election.
The Love Party's playful and provocative political project included trying to get its Spanish hunting terrier, Foxy, and a blind cat named Totte Flotte a seat at Town Hall. Anarchos admitted the party made the attempt as a gag, but it wanted to show that respect for animals was important, too.
